Hi, I'm Jonathan. I'm a software architect at Posit PBC, currently working on Positron, a polyglot data science IDE. My past projects include the RStudio IDE, Posit Workbench, and Microsoft Access.
I've always done full-stack engineering, and these days am writing mostly Rust for Positron's backend components, including its R kernel and Jupyter kernel supervisor, and Node/Typescript/React for its front end.
I love building and thinking about tools for people, and have spent most of my career on desktop data and productivity software; in the age of agentic coding and automated implementation, the importance of taste and good design choices has risen dramatically. I went on about this at some length in a recent keynote speech at posit conf.
